We have spent considerable time evaluating Crimson Desert since its release on March 19, 2026. This title represents an ambitious move for the South Korean developer Pearl Abyss. When the project was first announced in 2019, they initially planned for it to be a prequel to Black Desert Online. Black Desert Online is a massively multiplayer online role playing game that achieved global success due to its combat depth and graphical quality. However, during the lengthy development cycle, they decided to change the project into a standalone single player action adventure game. This decision moved the game away from multiplayer systems and toward a focused narrative experience. We believe it is important to analyze how this transition affected the final quality of the game for potential players.

What is Crimson Desert?
Crimson Desert is an open world action adventure game located on the continent of Pywel. The narrative follows a character named Kliff Macduff. He serves as the leader of the Greymanes, which is a group of mercenaries. At the beginning of the game, a rival group known as the Black Bears carries out a violent ambush. This event causes the Greymanes to scatter across the continent. We see Kliff attempt to find his surviving companions and seek revenge against the leader of the Black Bears, a warrior named Myurdin.
The game is available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. It utilizes the proprietary BlackSpace Engine, which was developed by Pearl Abyss specifically for their modern titles. This engine allows them to render high levels of detail in the environment and handle complex physical interactions. We observed that the game includes many activities beyond the main story. These activities include taming wild horses, fishing, and engaging in large scale fortress sieges. They have designed the world to be seamless, meaning that players can travel between regions without encountering loading screens.
The Relationship to Black Desert Online
We must clarify the technical and narrative relationship between Crimson Desert and Black Desert Online. Although Crimson Desert started as a part of the Black Desert universe, they eventually turned it into a separate intellectual property. The two games do not share a story timeline or the same characters. However, they share a distinct mechanical heritage.
They used many of the combat foundations from Black Desert Online when building Crimson Desert. This includes a combat system that relies on specific button combinations to perform powerful attacks. We also noticed that certain user interface elements and inventory management systems feel similar to those found in multiplayer games. For example, the inventory uses a grid system that requires frequent organization. Because the game was once intended to be an MMORPG, some of these “vestigial” systems remain in the single player version. We believe this is a direct result of the project’s history.
Who is Pearl Abyss
Pearl Abyss functions as both the developer and the publisher for this title. The company was founded in 2010 and is based in Gwacheon, South Korea. They are known for their commitment to using in-house technology rather than licensing external game engines. This approach allowed them to create a unique visual style for Crimson Desert.
The development of this game took approximately seven years. They invested a large budget into the project to ensure it could compete with other major global releases. By acting as their own publisher, they maintained total control over the creative direction and the release schedule. We noticed that this autonomy allowed them to delay the game multiple times to improve the technical performance and refine the mechanics. They are now focusing their efforts on post launch updates to improve the experience based on player feedback.
Characters
While Kliff is the primary protagonist, the game allows players to utilize two other characters during specific parts of the journey. These characters are Damiane and Oongka. Damiane is a highly mobile character who uses a rapier and a flintlock pistol. He is designed for players who prefer fast attacks and ranged combat. Oongka is a much larger warrior who uses heavy axes. His combat style focuses on raw strength and wrestling moves.
We found that while Kliff is the only character available for the main story missions, players can switch between the three characters during open world exploration. This allows for variety in how players approach combat encounters. They have implemented a skill tree for each character that is tied to Abyss Artifacts. Instead of traditional experience points, players must find these artifacts to unlock new abilities or increase their health and stamina. We believe this system encourages exploration because players must seek out hidden locations to grow stronger.
Gameplay
There has been much discussion in the community regarding the control scheme of Crimson Desert. We noticed that many players find the controls to be complex or awkward. This is because many actions require the player to hold down multiple buttons simultaneously. For example, to perform a specific counter attack, a player might need to hold a shoulder button while pressing two face buttons at a time.
In a single player game, players often expect simpler controls that are easy to remember. The current system is more typical of a multiplayer game where players need access to dozens of different skills. We believe that this feedback is valid, as the complexity can lead to input errors during intense battles. However, they have already released patches to address some of these concerns. Version 1.00.02 of the game included improvements to the responsiveness of the character movements and adjusted the timing for parrying attacks.
Despite the issues with the controls, we believe the game is a high quality product. The world is dense and filled with secrets. The boss battles are a highlight of the experience. We encountered bosses such as the Red Devil and the Staglord, which require the player to learn specific attack patterns and use environmental hazards to win. A single aspect of the game being difficult to control does not make the entire game poor. The world design and the technical fidelity demonstrate that they have created a robust gaming experience.

We have identified two main groups of players who might be interested in this title.
For the MMO Veteran
If you have extensive experience with Black Desert Online or other complex RPGs, you will likely appreciate the depth of the combat. These players are used to memorizing button sequences and managing complex character builds. For this group, Crimson Desert feels like a high budget expansion of the mechanics they already understand. We believe these players will find the 50 to 80 hours of content to be very satisfying.
For the New Player
If you are a new player who prefers simple and intuitive action games, you might find the learning curve to be steep. You will need to spend time in the tutorial areas to master the movement and combat systems. We suggest that these players approach the game with patience. If you are not willing to learn a complex control scheme, the game might be a source of frustration. However, if you enjoy exploring a detailed world and discovering lore, the narrative may still be worth the effort.
Is it worth buying
We have concluded that Crimson Desert is a significant achievement for Pearl Abyss. It is an ambitious game that successfully moves the company into the premium single player market. While they have inherited some mechanical friction from their history as an MMO developer, the overall quality of the game is very high. The continent of Pywel is one of the most detailed open worlds we have seen in recent years.
Is it worth buying? We believe the answer is yes for most RPG fans. The amount of content provided for the purchase price is substantial. They are committed to supporting the game with future updates and potential multiplayer features. We look forward to seeing how they continue to refine the experience. If you can manage the complex controls, you will find a rewarding and technically impressive journey.
