Set in 14th-century Europe within a fictional Carpathian region called Vale Sangora, The Blood of Dawnwalker presents a dark fantasy setting shaped by real historical turmoil. The valley is already suffering from war and the Black Death when a vampire faction named the Vrakhiri takes control. Led by a vampire lord named Brencis, the Vrakhiri overthrow the human rulers and force the local population to submit to a regular blood tribute.
The story follows Coen, a young villager working to keep his family alive while his younger sister suffers from the plague. After a direct encounter with Brencis, Coen is infected and becomes a Dawnwalker, a hybrid entity split between human and vampire states across the day-night cycle.
During the day, Coen remains human and can travel freely under the sun. At night, he transforms into a full vampire with access to supernatural abilities and magic. The entire narrative takes place across thirty in-game days, requiring players to manage time, investigate local factions, and make decisions that decide the fate of Coen’s family.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is developed by Rebel Wolves, an independent Polish studio founded in 2022 by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who previously served as the game director for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The development team includes several other former CD Projekt Red veterans, including creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz and narrative director Jakub Szamałek. Global publishing and distribution are handled by Bandai Namco Entertainment.
Due to this development background, the game shares noticeable structural similarities with The Witcher 3. Media previews and hands-on impressions frequently note a familiar approach to dark fantasy worldbuilding, investigation mechanics, mature storytelling, and complex quest consequences.
Instead of replicating that model directly, Rebel Wolves uses this design experience to build a different structural framework. The Blood of Dawnwalker combines these familiar role-playing elements with a thirty-day time management system and distinct day-night gameplay loops, creating a narrative sandbox rather than a traditional linear storyline. The game is scheduled to launch on September 3 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

In traditional vampire stories, sunlight is fatal. The Blood of Dawnwalker alters this rule through Coen’s condition as a Dawnwalker. Because his transformation leaves him caught between human and vampiric states, his physical abilities and magic shift based on the time of day.
During the daytime, Coen remains human. He can walk freely in the sun, enter human settlements without drawing hostility, and interact with local villagers. Daylight suppresses Coen’s vampiric powers, so magical combat during the day relies on human witchcraft. These spells draw on traditional herbs, natural elements, and pagan rituals practiced by mortal witches, which function only under sunlight when vampiric blood magic is dormant.
At night, Coen turns into a full vampire. His physical appearance changes, and he gains access to supernatural abilities. These include blood magic, telekinesis, heightened senses, and speaking with the dead. Nighttime also brings out more aggressive monsters and rival vampire factions, altering how players navigate the environment.
Warning: Story Spoilers Ahead
Coen’s dual nature is the result of how he was infected. During his encounter with the vampire lord Brencis, the infection process was interrupted mid-transformation. Because the event coincided with specific solar conditions, Coen was neither fully killed nor fully turned. Instead, his body bonded with both mortal blood and vampiric curse, anchoring his human form to daylight and triggering his vampiric transformation only when the sun sets.

Player agency is a core design focus in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Rather than locking Coen into a fixed moral trajectory, the story adapts to how players decide to navigate his infection and the conflicts within Vale Sangora.
Players can choose to embrace Coen’s vampiric nature, relying heavily on predatory behaviors, feeding, and blood magic to gain power. Alternatively, players can actively reject the vampiric curse, minimizing harm to humans and relying instead on mortal weapons and daylight witchcraft.
This freedom extends to Coen’s core motivations. Players can prioritize saving his family from the plague, pursue personal vengeance against Brencis and the Vrakhiri, or focus on political maneuvering between human rebels and rival vampire factions. Because these decisions directly affect character survival, quest paths, and faction standings over the course of the thirty-day limit, the narrative produces distinct outcomes based on player actions.

A defining feature of the game is its thirty-day time economy. As players explore, complete tasks, and travel across Vale Sangora, time steadily advances through a structured day-and-night calendar.
Running out of time does not result in a game-over screen or restart the player’s progress. Instead, reaching the end of the thirty days acts as an unyielding deadline that triggers an irreversible set of narrative events. The game world evolves based on what the player managed to accomplish, or neglected to do, during that window.
If key objectives are left unresolved when the timer expires, the story moves forward regardless. Characters may die, factions may change control over regions, and Coen’s personal objectives will adapt to the new state of the world. Because gameplay continues after the thirty-day mark, the time limit serves as a structural tool that forces permanent consequences.
Rebel Wolves has outlined broader plans for the Dawnwalker intellectual property, establishing that the first entry forms part of a multi-era franchise spanning centuries, cultures, and continents. Visual teasers released by the studio even offer a glimpse of Coen in a 21st-century modern setting.
Despite this long-term vision, the developers have clarified that The Blood of Dawnwalker is a complete, self-contained release set entirely in the 14th century, without unresolved plot threads or cliffhanger endings.
Addressing questions surrounding the franchise roadmap, Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz stated:
“I have a feeling that today’s presentation may have surprised many of you who did not expect Coen’s saga to move into modern times. However, I would like to emphasize that each installment in the series will be a standalone game with its own story, without narrative cliffhangers, unresolved plot threads, or time travel ideas. Since forming Rebel Wolves, we have been very clear that we aim for The Blood of Dawnwalker to be a self-contained story, and now, as we approach the release of the first chapter, we wanted to shed a bit more light on our wider perspective and tease where the story ultimately leads.”
Narrative Director Jakub Szamałek expanded on how this multi-era framework functions from a story perspective:
“I love the potential that lies within Coen, as well as his powers and abilities as a Dawnwalker. His journey begins in a dark 14th-century fantasy world, a setting players deeply enjoy, and while it may feel familiar, the unique Carpathian Mountains setting will allow us to surprise them more than once. The next installments of his saga will bring new stories and new characters, but they will take place in different eras, locations, and cultures. Writing the narrative for projects of this scale is an incredibly satisfying undertaking. And while Coen and Brencis’ conflict will reach its conclusion in The Blood of Dawnwalker, attentive players will certainly come across breadcrumbs related to the overarching plot spanning the saga.”
By structuring the game as both a standalone medieval story and the foundation for a historical saga, Rebel Wolves aims to resolve Coen’s immediate conflict while laying subtle narrative connections for future titles.
